Cauleen Smith is a filmmaker and visual artist based in San Diego, California where she holds an acting associate professorship from 2008-2012 in the media area of UCSD Visarts. One component of the project is the production of five flash mob street performances involving a marching band inspired by Sun Ra’s Arkestra. The second component of the project (to premiere in Chicago in the Fall of 2011) is a full-length video that chronicles the urban legends of Sun Ra’s time in Chicago as well as the contemporary artists who live and work in this city.  The third component of the piece is a vinyl 12″, on the “A” side of which are the live street recordings of the insurgent marching band Chicago street events and on the “B” side stories and interviews about cosmological events in Chicago.  The foldgate will house a DVD of the video as well as writings about Sun Ra and Chicago by scholar and WhiteWalls publisher Anthony Elms, and the tradition of processionals by curator Claire Tancons.
